Changing Burrows #2
Hi there, folks! Amalia here, welcoming you back to our second post logging our adventures of moving back into Michael´s childhood home!
So, a bit of a theme has established itself by now:
We -never- have enough time for everything, and have to simply chip away at things one bit at a time. Sometimes that means solving practical problems in the house, other times it's entirely bureaucratic stuff, like sorting out insurances, banking stuff and whatnot.
Honestly, a lot of the time the latter feels like it's just getting in the way of the former. We actually like solving the practical problems. Feels like we're really doing stuff and preparing our new home! But then we need to take an evening to just make phone calls and write emails. Bah, i say!
But then, sometimes, we take a moment to look around. Go for a walk and really take in where we're going to be living.
.... and then, it instantly becomes worth it. We didn't exactly live in a big city these past few years, but this is a proper village, with 1600 Inhabitants. It's so quiet and peaceful, and you get signs like this:
A sign literally telling you to.... hold your horses. And mopeds, too. π
Anyway, we're not here to brag about smelling cow dung on our morning walks! We're here to tell you what's been happening around our house!
And well, it's been quite busy since our last post! We did in fact stay at our house this whole week. Going back to our apartment on Sunday, mainly to finish writing/formatting this post on the PC, pick up some stuff and take a day off to play video games.π
So, one weird but quite necessary task was this:
These are little bottles of Fortimel, which is like Actimel, but a little more "specialized" for health-related dietary needs. And there was a stack of multiple boxes of the stuff in the hallway, all of which was expired for good measure.
So, one entire evening was spent just opening these little bottles, emptying them in the toilet and putting the bottle in the plastic bin. (Or well, plastic gets collected in bags here, actually. Gotta get used to that.) Felt a bit silly, but at least it was a relaxed evening. Just watched some YouTube videos while we did that.
Also, on a similar note, we spent another evening just going through most of the food stocks on site, sorting out and discarding anything expired that we found. Also, yes, just -most- of the food stocks. We didn't get to all of them, yet. So there'll be more of that! Woo!
But yeah. One major step forward happened with the internet!
.... err, yes. That really was how we found the cabling. Believe it or not, the very Internet we're using to write these words is coming trough that jury-rigged pile of spaghetti. Although we've cleaned it up a bit after taking the picture.
More importantly though, we've sorted out our own internet provider by now, so over the course of the next week, we should be able to stop using the still-existing-but-soon-to-expire contract of Michael's stepmother's. Once that's established, we'll also bring over our PC, and with it, our hobbies and ability to get much more stuff done.
In fact, once our PC is here, we might even find time to occasionally work on a gaming-related blog post or something! No promises though. The house is still going to be keeping us seriously occupied for a good while. But still, it's progress, and it'll allow us to start living a bit more normally. And speaking of normal living:
We've put our name on the doorbell(Well, Michael's name.π)! We can receive mail and stuff, now! That's also the reason we took the step, because we need to take shipment of our new router. And we've also already ordered a couple of other necessities for the house.
Probably one of the biggest expenses involved in our moving process will be an oven. The kitchen we're inheriting hasn't been used as a proper kitchen in a while, and while it's got a fridge, kitchen sink and some work space, it's got a washer and a dryer instead of an oven. Hmm.
.... and yes, we -do- have an oven in our old apartment, but to be honest, it's not great, and we'll be taking the opportunity to upgrade.π
Beyond all that though, a fair bit of the last 2 weeks was spend on donations. Books and clothing, to be exact. We had an abundance of both, and well, to be blunt, we needed to get rid of a lot of it.
Books-wise, we kept some for ourselves, but only a few of them were of any real interest to us. A lot of them were thick, chonky historical books, as well as a bunch of dog keeping books and the like, which aren't that interesting to our sci-fi and/or whodunnit-needs.
We found a few colleagues at work who were willing to take some various stuff off our hands, but yeah, thankfully we got some help when our co-owner came by and picked up a bunch of those with her car. She also picked up a bunch of old clothes, which we've been dropping off at donation boxes from time to time. Still have a few loads to go, but a good 90% of that is now done.
Curiously, the thing we had the most of were....
Shoooooeeees!
..... that wasn't even all of them! But yeah, Michael's parents certainly had a lot of shoes. And most of them were in good nick, perfectly good for donations! And yeah, that's where they all went. Load off our shoulders.
Next week, we're looking to get some more bureaucratic stuff done, as well as clearing the balcony (bunch of debris out there, broken watering cans and whatnot). If things go well, we'll be set up with our computer at our house, this time next week. Oh, and we'll be grabbing the window curtains from our apartment, so we can put them up upstairs, where we'll be moving into. Currently, there's only those see-through curtains that serve about as much function as a flat tire.
Gonna get some proper, opaque curtains in there, then we can use the proper bedroom, too!
(Currently sleeping on a sofa bed in the future studio, because our future bedroom is street-side and without proper window blinds, people can just.... see you.)
Anyway, that's about all we've got to report, this week. It's been busy, and it'll continue to be so. But hey, here's something we neglected to share last time, when we cleared out the attic:
We found some of Michael's old childhood stuff, which we'll be using for decoration purposes!
But yeah, until next time, stay safe, remember to take a day off from time to time and have a good one!
