Status Report #28: 19th of April, 2026

Good morning, fellow Wombatants!

Welcome to another Status Report. It's Michael with you today, and we've had a rather-productive couple of weeks! But before we get into our usual program, let us update you on...

-The Rebrand-

Well, we've got our YouTube channels sorted now, with our new one being "Close Quarters Wombat" and our old stuff on "CaptainCasualMusic" YouTube wouldn't take just "Captain Casual" for some reason, but eh, we weren't picky. As long as we don't have two channels both under the same name anymore, it's all good.

Our Spotify artist account login isn't available yet, as Spotify support actually reached out to us for clarification about our connection to CQWombat, and why it is that we should be able to manage both channels. Gave 'em that, but it'll probably take a bit.

Other than that, well, most things are in place. The main thing we still need is a new logo and new banners, which we're working on.

Oh, and eventually, since we're getting into visual art, we're also looking to get on Pinterest and DeviantArt, but y'know, we'll be crossing that bridge when we have stuff to upload.😉

-Blogging-

Well, since we decided to reprioritize and treat all our projects with equal importance, our blog writing has ballooned a bit. There's currently 3 posts in advanced stages of writing, all 3 of which should be coming out within the next week or two.

Aside from that, we've got a million ideas for things to write about, and we're even planning a new Casualia Parks-style series, though with a game that's much better at keeping things fresh and interesting for each chapter, where neither we, nor you will know quite what's going to happen next. Look forward to that.😉

Oh, also yes, you read that right up there. We're now calling you "Wombatants". We actually always struggled a bit with what to call our fans, since we tried all sorts of formats. So you could be readers, or listeners, or even viewers. Soooo we needed a bit of a name for you good folks. And it hit us like lightning the other day: If you're involved with Close Quarters Wombat..... well, surely that would make you.... a Wombatant. Yeees.

-Art-

Well, we'd be sharing a picture or two of our in-progress art projects here, but since we're working on our premiere piece, which will also double as our Logo for a while, as well as the cover for our self-titled premiere single as Close Quarters Wombat...

.... we'd rather keep this one back until we're ready. I know i'm rather overhyping it, but heck, i can honestly say that it's turning out way better than i thought it would. I was expecting our first proper, finished piece to be quite scruffy and scrawly, but we did some shading yesterday and it actually looks..... pretty good? Certainly much better than i had any hopes for, so that neat.😀

Aside from that though, it's good news! We realized that Krita, the software we use, has a pretty neat feature for recording speed paints! So while we discovered it too late to use with our current project, most if not all future projects should end up on YouTube in that format, along with sharing them normally, of course.

We're also contemplating whether or not we should share photographs alongside our art. You might have noticed, when we're out and about, there's moments when we look at our surroundings and go "This is idiotically good-looking", so we whip out our phone and do one of these:

I mean, i'm not sure simple pictures like that would qualify us as a "photographer" per se. Seems a bit of a professional word to use. But if we're already gonna be getting some channels up where we share visual art, perhaps people would like it if we shared those kinds of photos, too? A bit of variety, eh? Might be worth exploring, anyway.

-Music-

Well uhm, i won't lie, this was pretty much at a standstill for the past couple of weeks. Our "second debut single", if you will, is fully done and mastered, but well, we need to finish painting our cover in order to release it. So that's where we stand.

Generally speaking though, we think the way we approach musical projects is likely gonna change a lot, now that we consider ourselves more of a "general" artist. We're probably gonna have stretches where we don't work on a tune at all, and then when we get the idea for something, really focus on it for a few weeks and get it done. That, at this point, seems far more likely than continuing our current approach of chipping away slowly at a tune for months.

Time will tell and all that.

-YouTube-

So, one thing we've been thinking about in regard to this whole rebrand and our reprioritization is what we want to do with YouTube.

It's a platform we kinda always struggled with, because y'know, we like to write. We like to put music together, and as it turns out, we quite like to draw. But something neither of us really enjoys is putting videos together.

But for obvious reasons, we would -like- a decently active YouTube channel. If you look through our old channel, you can see we tried a variety of things, from solo podcasting over sound bites all the way to gaming shorts.

So, what we figure is this: With this new channel, we wanna keep it simple, try to share stuff that's actually of interest, and manage it in such a way that we actually enjoy doing it, and in a way that it can help give exposure to this blog, to our art and so on.

So, simply put, we're thinking variety show. We already mentioned that our speed paints will end up on there, because y'know, that's obvious. We also wanna do gaming videos. And i mean raw gameplay, without commentary. Mostly of games that we're either writing about of have written about, though we might occasionally share something beyond that. Our future music releases will, of course, also end up on there.

Is that gonna be a highly optimized approach to maximize viewership? Of course not. Our past experimentation has shown that if you want that, simply do gaming shorts (Those Teardown videos were our most successful uploads by far, despite being a simple little side project for us). Then again, some of that game footage -will- probably be in the shorts format, so hm, who knows?

Point is though, we're looking to make our YouTube channel, and our online presence as a whole about sharing cool stuff. It's not supposed to be about search engine optimization and sacrificing your soul in order to please some algorithms. Gotta enjoy what you do. Otherwise, why do it?

-Life-

Yes. We have indeed been alive.

Normally we waffle on about DCS here, but we can't. We didn't have any time for it until just yesterday evening, and even then we just did a bit of messing around with the Apache, mainly to do a bit of the aforementioned gameplay recording.

Other than that, we've had a great holiday (from our dayjob) in the week following the last report. Got a great mix of relaxation and productivity with our own projects going.

Though yeah, beyond what we've already talked about..... hmm, we've been watching Stargate SG1. Currently in the second season. Pretty cool show i used to watch as a kid, and it's interesting to look back and see how certain things definitely affected you during your formative years.

Oh, and we're currently reading "The Eye of Ezekiel" by C.Z. Dunn. Nice book. Our first by the author actually, and we like his style.

We've actually been playing with the thought of a "Book report"-series on here, but well, to be honest, we're not sure we wanna put -even more- time into blogging. We enjoy it, but y'know, too much of a good thing and all that.😜

Anyhow, i figure that'll do for our report. Hope you're having a great time, and until next time, our fellow Wombatants, stay safe and have a good one!
